Dreaming of the Whte Buffalo
Last night, my dream included a white buffalo. In some Native American traditions, this is associated with a miracle or a fulfillment of a prophecy or the need for a vision quest. While my thoughts did go momentarily to the upcoming election and all the miracles that will be needed in the near future, I found myself drawn to a personal memory instead.

Once, when my daughter was a toddler, I took her to a petting zoo that had been set up in a parking lot in Milford, New Hampshire. There were the usual bunnies, baby goats and chicks, but in the center of the area was a baby buffalo, only a few days old, in a pen of his own. I stepped into the pen and sat down and the buffalo came over and placed his head on my lap the way a cat does. I ran my hand through the curly fur, smelling vaguely of lanolin like the wool of a sheep. I heard and felt his deep voice through my bones, a cross between the moo of a cow and the meow of a vary large cat.  I started quietly singing to him, mostly Welsh lullabyes, starting with "Ar Hyd Y Nos". He seemed to want to sing along in his rumbling bass voice. I thought of how we two were vegetarians, unlike most of the creatures around him that day, and wondered  whether he would ever stand on the wide high prairie feeling the wind through his fur, whether he would live out his life in a zoo or be shot at by wealthy hunters or simply raised to die in the slaughterhouse. I tried to speak my thoughts to him, but ended up choking on tears.

O buffalo spirit, whatever you are: we are brothers on this Earth. Whatever your fate and mine, they are intertwined. May peace and loving kindness prevail on Earth!

Dear syxx,

Thank you so much for commenting. Of course I don't mind! Are you the friend of pirate_moo who goes by the name of scared_syxx (in MySpace I think)? In any case, if we weren't friends before, we are now!
