I just wanted to pass on this link from alphistia , which I find incredibly inspiring. If anybody gives you the standard advice that you need at least three acres of land to be self-sufficient, just take a look at what this California family is doing with a fifth of an acre! http://www.pathtofreedom.com/urbanhomestead/ataglance.shtml .

They claim to be growing 50-90 percent of what they consume on their own land (the percentage varies with the season), and making a considerable amount of their income by selling home-grown and home-made products.

Of course, southern California is not at all like New Hampshire, but a whole lot of what they're doing there could be done here, with local modifications and tradeoffs. The home-grown products would be different here, and the lot-size would likely be larger than is possible in Pasadena. For example, a local young man started this thriving maple-syrup business while he was still in High School:
